TurboBackup by FileStream Inc. has a fine set of features, including the ability to backup all of your Windows Operating System settings and preferences. But the program was hard to use.

We originally reveiwed version 5 of TurboBackup. Since our review, FileStream has released TurboBackup 6.0. Click on the Product Details button for a list of new features.

Feature Set:  

TurboBackup can also backup email messages and address books, and you can set encryption and password protection on your backups. The program also offers variations on the type of backup you may perform. For example, you can:

• Full backup to the same location/hard drive
• Full backup to a different location
• Incremental backup (based on the time stamp) to a new location
• Incremental backup (based on the archive bit) to a new location
• Daily backup to new location

Most people won't need all this diversity, but it would come in handy if, for example, you have a daily backup scheduled that normally goes to a hard drive, but you want today's backup on DVD-R instead so you can use it on another computer. You can change the backup destination easily without changing your other settings.

TurboBackup doesn't offer differential backups or one-click image backups, and the program doesn't backup email services other than Outlook and Outlook Express. You can't backup to a remote FTP location or compare the backup to the original for a quality check.

Ease of Use:  

We had no problems or errors during TurboBackup installation.

TurboBackup software could be easier to use. The main screen needs improvement-the program should point out step one, step two, and so on. FileStream has included a wizard to help you select a backup project, but beyond this, you're on your own. We feel that the opening screen should advise those new to the program to read the help files before trying a backup.

Backup/Restore:  

TurboBackup backed up and restored everything as we intended, without errors.

Help/Documentation:  

The help documentation was exceptional. TurboBackup's help includes an index, a search engine and a first-rate quick guide with feature overviews, step-by-step instructions and mini screenshots to show you each step of the backup and restore process.

Summary:  

We recommend going through the help files before using TurboBackup by FileStream. We didn't have any questions after spending time in the comprehensive quick guide.
